SEO for Small Business – Changes to Google Algorithm and Backlinking

Internet Marketing, SEO for Small Business, Small Business Marketing

I only have time for a quick post before I run off to my real job this morning. I thought this was worth mentioning, especially if you are trying to figure out how to promote your small business on the Internet.

I read a very interesting article yesterday on ComputerWorld wherein they were discussing the fact that Google is moving to embrace semantic search technologies. I think this can be good and bad. The good news is that I don’t think they will be changing the manner in which they determine the position of a site on their search page. It is widely believed that high rankings can be achieved by “earning” quality Backlinks for one’s site. There are many link building programs available on the web that are ethical and effective. So in this respect I don’t think the semantic search they are implementing will impact the ranking of your small business website.

Where I do believe there will be a change is that they are planning on including the amount of text returned from your website in the snippet that typically follows the title of your page. The reason this may be problematic is that if a user runs a query and sees results returned for your site, they may find the answer straight from Google’s snippet, and never click through to your site.

This is something small and medium sized businesses need to be mindful of when implementing SEO strategies to ensure they continue to see a fair ROI on their web investment.
