We have a process for getting ready in the morning, a process for going to bed at night, a process for driving to work, a process for driving home when we are done.  I think you get the point; our lives are full of processes.  Businesses and organizations are no different.  They are full of processes, some well defined and some undefined.</p>
<p><strong>The Secret to Success</strong><br />
I firmly believe one of the biggest factors between businesses that are successful and those that aren’t is  the successful ones know and understand what their business processes are and focus on the improvement of those processes.  The reason the understanding of these business processes is so powerful is that the organization that understands how it gets things done can also understand how to improve the efficiency surrounding that process, minimize costs, and increase profits.  That is a powerful tool.  It is easy to see how a firm grasp of your processes can help you to increase the efficiency of your business model, thereby making the actions required to execute the processes lean in nature.</p>
<p><strong>Efficiency Studies and What They Mean Today</strong><br />
Around the turn of the last century massive studies focused on the efficiency of workers and the processes in the plants they worked in.  These human factor studies began to help business owners understand that slight modifications of even the smallest step in a production process could net significant increases in productivity.  The concept of lean process improvement is similar to these early studies in that it seeks to identify possible bottlenecks and constraints within established processes and minimize or eliminate them where possible.</p>
<p>Consider the impact on a production line where a bucket of bolts is placed just out of arms reach where the mechanic may require a full second to reach the bucket, retrieve a bolt, and place it in the designated product.  Now consider identifying that as a constraint on the production time of that particular product and as a result moving the bucket of bolts closer to the mechanic.  This move cuts the time it takes him to get the bolt in half.  For one bolt this may not seem significant, but over the course of 100,000 bolts the company saves 50,000 seconds.  By making all processes lean, production time is greatly reduced, more products are made, and more profits are generated.</p>
<p>You do not have to be a rocket scientist to enhance the business processes in your organization.  There are many solid books (The Lean Manager: A Novel of Lean Transformation), certification programs (Lean Six Sigma, ITIL), and websites (<a title="ASU LSS" href="http://cpd.asu.edu/cme/">http://cpd.asu.edu/cme/</a> ) out there that can provide you with enough information to get started.  As with everything, there is a learning curve involved, so take plenty of time to read through the materials and do your research.  If you decide the topic of lean management is above your head, you can approach organizations like Arizona State University and ask them to help you with process identification and engineering.</p>

If you operate at all in the Internet Marketing/Search Engine Optimization industry you are all too familiar with the Panda (aka Farmer) update.  For those of you not familiar with the update, Google deployed a change to their algorithm in response to several very embarrassing exploitations by major players in the Internet commerce game (history on the update can be found <a title="Panda Update" href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704520504576162753779521700.html?mod=WSJ_Tech_LEFTTopNews">here</a>).  The update was created when it became apparent that large companies were buying links on questionable websites to gain an upper-hand in the SEO landscape.  Google frowns on the practice of gaming their system and as such felt they needed to take action to stem the damage that had been done to the integrity of their search results.  Hence the now infamous Panda Update was born.</p>
<p><strong>Who It Impacted</strong></p>

<p>The bad news is that if you were gaming the Google system, the update slapped you hard.  The good news is that if you played by the rules and built your site according to G’s policies your site may have actually moved up in the rankings.  The update was designed to penalize those sites that were manipulating the Google rankings for the niches they targeted.  While it is not uncommon for SEO engineers to take certain measures to ensure sites rank well, most adhere loosely to Google’s guidelines to ensure their customer’s sites are not penalized in these types of updates (typically referred to as being White Hat).  The problem Google faced is that many businesses that are avid advertisers on their AdWords network were also spending large sums of money to artificially create authority across hundreds of niches.  If this were a small business site, or your homemade hobby site that was guilty of manipulating the rankings, Google would have blown your site back to the dark ages; however, Google had to penalize these businesses without discouraging them from continuing to run their ads.  Most of those businesses received a manual inspection and received a manually enforced penalty, but G had to deal with other sites that had followed the business model the giants were using.  To accomplish this SEO leveling, an algorithm change was introduced.</p>
<p>Given the complexity of the algorithm change, I suspect it was in the works well before JCPenny’s and Overstock were outed.  However, it looks incredibly bad when an Internet giant is called out regarding unfair gaming of the search engine rankings by someone who has almost no SEO experience (the gentleman writing the story was a reporter by trade with little to no experience in the Internet realm).</p>
<p><strong>SEO Impact To Small Business</strong><br />
Smaller local businesses probably didn’t feel any impact from the update to their business sites.  I know that several of my clients actually experienced a net gain in the search engine rankings.  I have one client that specializes in <a title="Arizona Tile" href="http://goodhuetile.com">Arizona Tile</a>, and they jumped forward two pages after the update.  Likewise I have a side business that reviews items such as <a title="Black Picture Frames" href="http://pictureframesiworld.com/how-to-use-black-picture-frames-in-the-home/">black picture frames</a><br />
and that site saw marginal increases as well.  However, if you were in the Internet spam business and your site had links from questionable neighborhoods, you may have noticed a decline in your rankings.  Several folks I know experienced this negative effect.  Their sites took a hit in the rankings not because they promote spam, but some of the offsite SEO they had performed caused the new algorithm to penalize their rankings.</p>
<p><strong>How To Avoid Similar Penalties In The Future</strong><br />
The bottom line to avoiding a severe penalty like JCPenny’s and Overstock’s is to ensure the offsite SEO that is being performed on your site is being done by a professional that understands the game and that can get you the long term rankings without sending you to the bottom of the search engine results for making Google angry.  I also caution my customers to be very wary of any <a title="Arizona SEO" href="http://seo4smb.com">Arizona SEO</a> firm that promises overnight results that will take you right to the top.  Proper offsite optimization takes time and needs to be done very carefully to get you the results you expect and are paying for.</p>

<p>Google maps optimization is changing the face of search engine results. It is a fairly recent change to the search engine system that has a highly interactive visual element. Approximately 30% of the visual space on a search engine results page to a submitted query is dedicated to a map that identifies the locations of relevant businesses and marks them with small red balloons. The goal of any business wanting to increase customer traffic, is to appear as a red balloon in these query results. It is becoming known as the 7-pack. Typically, Google will show up to seven relevant businesses next to the map with their red balloon markers. These are the top seven most reliable and relevant results for the query entered into the search engine.</p>
<p>There are many different factors used to gauge whether a site is considered reliable and relevant and SEO partner companies use these likely elements to increase the recognition for businesses. To start, Google maps optimization relates directly to location, so if you want to appear in the results for a certain area, you better have a business located there. If you also want appear in the results for nearby cities, then that would require some additional SEO partner work.</p>
<p>Unlike the phone book, where the alphabetical system predominates visibility, the business category seems to have a larger effect for a Google maps optimization search. In almost any phone book you can find businesses that have names such as A1 Auto, which is meant to get them listed at the beginning of the automotive section. Ranking well on a Google maps optimization search is not all that different than trying to be at the beginning of the phone book. It is a viable tactic to getting more business. However, with the Google search, it is better to have your business listed in an appropriate category, than to have a lot of keywords added to the business name. Keywords in the business name are important, but they also tend to happen naturally. <p>Just as links are important in SEO work, building citations with the correct business contact information is important for Google maps optimization. In this case, citations are directly referencing the business name, address, phone and email address. The more the Googlebots see the correct contact information on the internet, the more they will consider it an indicator of business verification and reliability. Without this reliability, the successful results from user searches could drop and injure Google credibility as well. It is in the search engine&#8217;s best interest to only provide reliable results to queries. Similarly, if Google finds a lot of citations for a business, but the contact information does not match, it can drop the credibility of your site.</p>
<p>Reviews and ratings are helpful with the sentimental analysis done by Google, but the point is listing in the 7-pack, so proximity to locations is a key factor. It doesn&#8217;t necessarily have to be near a city center. People often search for restaurants near their hotel, or places to stay near a prominent tourist site. It&#8217;s not necessarily the city center, but proximity to what people are searching that is important. If your business is near a popular tourist site, then it might be wise to associate that into the SEO work being completed. It could help the Google maps optimization rank.</p>
<p>Lastly, the age and expiration of the domain can be a factor with Google maps optimization. If a business has been around for sometime, or has a domain expiration that is far distant, that is considered more reliable in the eyes of Googlebots. It would be poor for Google credibility if they were to recommend a business that had closed or out of service. After all, the positive results users get from the search queries is what ultimately brings them back to ask again.</p>

<p>I performed my preliminary research and found that my test site performed decent. So, I decided to go out, conduct some in depth research on the fascinating world of boat covers and push on the the next phase of this little trial. I want to see how long it will take me to get within the first five entries on page 1 of Google.</p>
<p>I don&#8217;t have any sites that have monster PR so I will be building this site&#8217;s SEO from the ground up (so to speak). If my hypothesis is correct, it should not take too long to reach this goal.</p>
<p>I will keep you updated as to its status.</p>
<p>&#8230;Fast forward two weeks&#8230;</p>
<p>It took almost no time for the new site to rise quickly through the SERPs to attain the desired rank.  One of the primary reasons for this is that the products were not properly SEO&#8217;d (if that is even a word).  Had the other sites in that niche paid closer attention to their design and SEO implementation it would have been much more difficult for me to come in and usurp their position.  I have found some product areas that are very weak (like this one), and I have found some product areas that are very strong (<a title="Condo Big Bear" href="http://bigbearcabinsinfo.com" target="_blank">condo Big Bear</a>).  You can compare the two product areas and see if you can fing the difference.</p>
